Big Medicine: The York Project. In July 2024, a group of Black educators and environmental stewards from across the country set out on a four-day river journey along the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument to paddle, hike, and camp along the same river where the Lewis and Clark Expedition traveled 200 years ago.

Hasan and Malcolm were able to share their love of the outdoors in collaboration with the National Parks Service. Hasan's research on York over the past 25 years has built a relationship with the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, and he is a longtime collaborator and advisor on York’s legacy. As part of the robust programming around the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, 10 outdoorsmen, environmentalists, and historians came together to revisit part of the iconic voyage that York, Lewis, and Clark took 200 years ago.

The “Big Medicine” trip was a chance to perform York on the same ground York walked on, and a chance for Malcolm and Hasan to experience a once-in-a-lifetime trip that further solidified York’s immense contributions to this part of America’s legacy.

The trip was filmed by our partners at NEW Multimedia and developed into a 35-minute documentary.  This trip and documentary were commissioned by the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail and the National Park Service.
